Beyond the Trope
K.L. Walther has carved out a specific niche for herself: the high-vibe, emotionally intelligent teen romance. Maybe Meant to Be takes place at the Bexley School and follows Sage and Charlie, two best friends who the entire world has decided belong together. The fun of the book is watching them realize that the world is wrong.
What makes this work better than your average beach read is the dual-perspective storytelling. We get to see Charlie’s growing attraction to the new boy, Luke, and Sage’s realization that she’s actually falling for Charlie’s twin brother, Nick. It’s a bit of a romantic musical chairs, but it’s handled with a lot of grace.
For parents, the most interesting angle here is the exploration of social expectations. Charlie’s hesitation to embrace his feelings for Luke isn't just about his own identity; it’s about the 'brand' he and Sage have built as the school’s golden couple. It’s a great entry point for talking to kids about how hard it can be to change your 'role' in a social group once it’s been established.
If your kid liked The Summer of Broken Rules or is currently obsessed with Heartstopper, this is an easy recommendation. It’s light enough for a weekend read but has enough substance to stick around after the final page.
