Let's be real: this movie is a miss. The premise—wealthy execs hosting a dinner to mock people they consider 'idiots'—is mean-spirited from the jump, and spending 100 minutes watching Steve Carell's sweet but bumbling character get humiliated isn't as funny as the filmmakers thought it would be.
The 42% rating from both critics and audiences tells you what you need to know: this comedy doesn't land. It's uncomfortable cringe humor without the payoff, and while there's a tacked-on moral about not judging people, it comes way too late to redeem the preceding mockery.
Barry (Carell) reads as potentially neurodivergent, making the sustained ridicule even more uncomfortable. The stalker ex-girlfriend subplot is creepy, not funny. And the whole thing just feels...off.
If you're looking for a Steve Carell comedy, rewatch The 40-Year-Old Virgin or Crazy, Stupid, Love. This one's a schmuck move to recommend.
