Breaking is a well-made, empathetic drama about a real veteran who held a bank hostage after the VA repeatedly failed him. John Boyega is excellent, and the film handles its subject matter with care and nuance.
But let's be real: this is NOT family movie night material. It's heavy, sad, and anxiety-inducing. The 'entertainment' value is low—you're not going to enjoy watching this in the traditional sense. You'll appreciate it, maybe learn from it, but you won't have fun.
For older teens interested in social justice, mental health advocacy, or true crime, this could be valuable viewing that builds empathy and understanding. For everyone else? It's a pass unless you're specifically in the mood for a serious, depressing drama about systemic failure.
The WISE score reflects that it's thoughtful and enriching but lacking in wholesomeness, imagination, and safety for younger viewers—and honestly, it's just not something most people want to watch.
