How your child interacts with a language app matters just as much as the grammar they are practicing. New research indicates that while AI can reliably generate "leveled" lessons, the specific format of the question—whether it’s multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank—radically changes the mental effort required to learn.
AI-generated grammar drills effectively teach language skills, but the question format dictates how hard your child's brain has to work to find the answer. For new topics, multiple-choice is the most effective entry point, while fill-in-the-blank tasks provide the ultimate test of true mastery.
Most parents use digital apps like Duolingo or AI-powered tutors to supplement their child’s language education. This study proves that not all "screen time" in these apps is equal. If your child is flying through lessons, they might be stuck in low-effort formats that don't build long-term memory.
Understanding the "friction" in these apps helps you distinguish between a child who is actually learning and one who is just getting good at clicking buttons. This allows you to adjust their study habits—pushing for harder formats when they get comfortable and easing off when they are overwhelmed.
Large Language Models (LLMs) are now responsible for generating thousands of educational exercises at scale. Researchers wanted to know if this AI-generated content actually follows established difficulty standards (like the CEFR) and how the physical "interaction" with a screen—dragging a word versus typing it—impacts a student's cognitive load. As AI becomes the primary architect of digital worksheets, we need to know if it's actually sequencing lessons in a way that makes sense for a developing brain.
AI is surprisingly disciplined at following educational standards. The researchers found that LLM-generated drills accurately matched the difficulty tiers of the CEFR-J (the Japanese version of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). This means AI isn't just guessing; it can reliably sequence lessons from "easy" to "hard."
However, the "format" of the question created a massive swing in how students performed:
- Multiple-choice questions required the lowest mental effort, serving as the easiest way for students to recognize correct grammar.
- Cloze (fill-in-the-blank) tasks were the hardest. These created a significant barrier to active recall, making them the most rigorous test of whether a student actually knew the material.
- Drag-and-drop exercises resulted in the longest completion times. The researchers noted a significant "time penalty" here—not because the grammar was harder, but because the interface itself was more time-consuming to navigate.
Efficiency is often the enemy of deep learning. Just because a child is spending a long time on a digital assignment doesn't mean they are "learning" more. Drag-and-drop interfaces often create "interface friction" that inflates completion times without increasing the actual cognitive challenge.
If your child is using an app to study for a test, "fast" progress through multiple-choice questions might give them a false sense of security. They might "recognize" the right answer when it's right in front of them, but fail to "recall" it when they have to speak or write in a real-world setting.
This study is a preprint and has not yet completed the full peer-review process. The data also focused exclusively on Japanese junior high school students learning English. Because of this specific "L1/L2" (first language/second language) dynamic, the results might look different for a child learning a language that shares more similarities with their native tongue, such as an English speaker learning Spanish. Additionally, the study measured short-term performance on drills, not whether these students could actually hold a conversation three months later.
- If your child is starting a brand-new language topic... prioritize multiple-choice formats to build their confidence and prevent them from shutting down due to high cognitive load.
- If you want to know if your child has truly "learned" a concept... switch them to fill-in-the-blank (cloze) exercises, which force the brain to retrieve the information without any visual cues.
- If your child is complaining that an app is "taking too long" or feels "clunky"... check if the exercises are drag-and-drop. If so, switch to a text-entry or choice-based mode to keep the focus on grammar rather than the interface.
- If you are evaluating a new AI-powered tutor or app... check if the content is aligned with the CEFR standards, as this research shows AI is now highly reliable at following these professional difficulty levels.
Don't mistake speed for mastery or slowness for difficulty. To help your child actually learn a language, start with easy-win formats like multiple choice, but ensure they eventually face the "high-friction" challenge of fill-in-the-blank tasks to make the knowledge stick.
