This book is a classic for a reason, and unlike some other Newbery winners from the 50s, it actually holds up. It deals with big, messy themes like xenophobia and groupthink through the eyes of a girl who just wants to wear a nice dress and read a book.
It’s not 'brain rot' and it’s not boring, though it does require a slightly longer attention span than a graphic novel. If your kid liked 'The Crucible' in school (or if you want to prep them for it), this is the much more accessible, slightly less depressing version.
