The Talisman is a certified banger in the fantasy world, but it’s definitely not a bedtime story for your middle-schooler. It’s dark, it’s long, and it doesn't pull any punches when it comes to the 'evil' Jack encounters.
That said, if you have a teen who's already into Stephen King or high-stakes fantasy, this is essential reading. It’s imaginative in a way that modern 'portal fantasies' rarely achieve. Just be ready for some heavy conversations about the darker side of human nature.
Don't let the 12-year-old main character fool you; this is an adult novel. It's best for older teens (15+) who have the stomach for some gritty horror and the patience for a long, epic journey.
