The Penderwicks in Spring is the rare book that feels like it was written in 1950 but actually understands what it's like to be a kid in the 21st century. It’s not 'brain rot' and it’s definitely not boring.
It’s a bit darker and more emotional than the first three books in the series—Batty is dealing with some real-deal depression and guilt—but the payoff is a beautiful story about family healing. If your kid is going through a 'nothing is good to read' phase, this is the one to hand them. Just maybe have some tissues ready for the parts about the dog.
