Here's the thing: this is an important, well-written book based on an incredible true story. The 4.6 Amazon rating is earned. But the YA label is misleading.
Parents are right to flag this as reading more like an adult Holocaust novel. The violence is graphic, there's explicit sexual content, and the emotional weight is crushing. One parent called it 'extremely sexual'—that's not typical YA territory.
For a mature high school junior or senior ready to engage with difficult Holocaust literature, this offers a unique perspective on resistance, education, and hope in Auschwitz. The inclusion of Dita Kraus's own Q&A adds powerful authenticity.
But if you're looking for a first Holocaust book for a younger teen, this isn't it. The enriching score is high because for the right reader, this is profoundly educational. The safety and wholesome scores are low because it's brutal and explicit. Know your kid, preview the content, and don't let the 'teen librarian' hook fool you into thinking this is gentle.
