Look, if your kid has watched the first two Hobbit films and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, they'll probably want to finish this. But let's be honest: this movie is a slog.
Peter Jackson took the final chapters of a children's book and stretched them into a 144-minute CGI battle extravaganza that even critics couldn't fully endorse (59% on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic). It's relentlessly violent—not gory, but exhausting—with beheadings, impalements, and creature carnage that goes on and on and on.
The themes of greed, sacrifice, and unity are there, but they're buried under so much spectacle that they barely register. Bilbo, the heart of the story, gets sidelined for endless orc-smashing. A major character death provides emotional weight, but it's surrounded by so much chaos that it's hard to process.
For teens 13+ who are completionists and can handle intense fantasy violence, fine. But this isn't enriching family viewing—it's homework to finish the series. Younger kids should skip it entirely, and even adults might check their watches.
