25%View →If you’re looking for a nostalgic hit of Bedrock, stick to the original 1960s cartoons or even the 1994 John Goodman movie. This 2000 prequel is a loud, pun-heavy mess that replaces a solid original cast with actors who look like they’re at a very expensive, very confusing Halloween party.
It isn't 'harmful'—it's just not good. In a world with infinite streaming options, spending 90 minutes on a critically panned prequel from a quarter-century ago is a hard sell for any family night.
Best for kids aged 5 to 8 who aren't yet cynical about bad movies. Anyone older than 10 will likely find the acting and jokes painful.
It centers on friendship and the Fred/Wilma romance, but the setting is a cartoonish version of a casino town, complete with a 'playboy' villain and some slightly sleazy vibes.

There was a brief window in the late 90s and early 2000s where Hollywood was obsessed with turning Boomer-era cartoons into live-action spectacles. The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas is the tail end of that trend, and it shows. While the 1994 Flintstones movie had the benefit of John Goodman’s perfect casting and a certain mid-90s charm, Viva Rock Vegas feels like a direct-to-video project that accidentally got a theatrical budget.
The most interesting thing about the movie is the work from the Jim Henson Creature Shop. The puppets and animatronics for Dino and the Great Gazoo (played by Alan Cumming) have a physical presence that modern CGI often misses. However, the human performances are a different story. Mark Addy and Stephen Baldwin try their best to channel Fred and Barney, but the script gives them very little to work with beyond prehistoric puns and slapstick.
For a modern kid, the pacing of Viva Rock Vegas will feel strange. It’s a romantic comedy at its heart, focusing on the origin story of how Fred met Wilma and Barney met Betty. That means a lot of 'grown-up' plotting about social status and dating that might bore younger kids, while the 'kid' stuff (the slapstick and the alien) feels too juvenile for older ones.
Unless your child is a completionist who has seen every episode of the original cartoon and is desperate for more, this is one fossil you can leave in the ground.
