This is solid middle-grade entertainment that does what it sets out to do: get kids reading. The premise is fun, the humor lands, and Ben's self-deprecating voice feels authentic to the awkward middle school experience.
The language issue is real, though. If your family has a no-curse-words policy or your kid is on the younger/more sensitive side, you might want to flip through a copy first. It's not constant profanity, but it's enough that multiple parents noticed and at least one 10-year-old bailed.
That said, for kids 10-13 who've heard worse on the playground, this is a great gateway into longer chapter books. The series has serious staying power—Stuart Gibbs has written 10+ Spy School books, plus multiple other series, so if your kid connects with his style, you've struck gold. Just maybe start at 10+ instead of 8+.
