Shelter is a rare breed of YA fiction that works because it doesn't try too hard to be 'hip.' Harlan Coben just writes a damn good mystery and happens to put a teenager at the center of it.
It’s a fantastic pick for the kid who thinks they hate reading but will happily binge a Netflix thriller. The 2023 TV adaptation has given the book a second life, but the original text holds up better. It deals with grief and addiction in a way that feels honest rather than like a 'very special episode.' It’s fast, it’s smart, and it’s a way better use of a Saturday afternoon than scrolling TikTok.
