This is the Netflix algorithm made manifest: a perfectly calculated, focus-grouped attempt to create an animated hit that somehow ends up being aggressively mediocre. The concept—Hansel and Gretel as secret agents—has potential, but the execution is paint-by-numbers.
The ratings tell the story: 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, 6.2 on IMDb, and a brutal 2.7 out of 5 on Letterboxd. That last one is particularly damning because Letterboxd users tend to be generous with animated films. This is the kind of movie that exists to fill Netflix's content quota, not to be remembered.
It's not harmful—the sibling teamwork angle is nice, it's age-appropriate for elementary schoolers, and there's nothing objectionable. But it's also not particularly enriching, imaginative, or entertaining. Your kids might click on it during a rainy afternoon, watch it while half-playing on their tablets, and never mention it again. There are so many better animated films out there that actually have heart, humor, or something to say. This isn't one of them.
