Look, seaQuest DSV had good intentions. Steven Spielberg wanted to make an educational sci-fi show about ocean exploration, and in 1993, it was a decent concept. The problem is that 30+ years later, it's genuinely hard to watch.
The special effects are bargain-basement, the pacing makes molasses look speedy, and the educational bits feel like someone's forcing you to learn during your TV time. The Metacritic score of 51 tells you everything—this was middling even when it aired.
If your kid is obsessed with submarines or Jacques Cousteau documentaries, maybe give it a shot. But for 99% of families, this is a nostalgia watch for Gen X parents who remember it fondly, not something kids will actually enjoy. There are far better ways to teach ocean science in 2025—like, you know, actual ocean documentaries with modern footage.
