Here's the deal: Billy Mills' story is genuinely incredible and worth knowing about. First American to win the 10,000 meters at the Olympics? Against all odds? That's the stuff of legend.
But this 1983 movie? It's rough. The pacing drags, the production feels like a made-for-TV special, and while the heart is there, the execution just doesn't hold up. Kids raised on modern sports films will find this nearly unwatchable.
The 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is probably nostalgia talking, or people grading on a curve because the story itself is so inspiring. The 6.7 IMDb and 3.3 Letterboxd ratings are more honest—it's okay, not great.
If you want to teach your kids about Billy Mills (and you should!), maybe watch a documentary or read about him instead. This film is more educational artifact than entertainment.
