Red Rising is a legitimately imaginative dystopian novel with strong worldbuilding and meaty themes about revolution, class warfare, and moral compromise. Pierce Brown created something genuinely compelling here.
But let's be clear: this is not for younger teens, despite how it's marketed. Multiple parent reviews and reader accounts confirm the violence is extreme—graphic, sustained, and intense enough to make adult readers uncomfortable. If you have a 16- or 17-year-old who loves dark sci-fi and can handle mature content, this could be a great read that sparks conversations about power and justice. If your 13-year-old brings this home from the school library, maybe redirect them to something else for a few years. The themes are rich, but the delivery is rough.
