Here's the truth: this movie is fine, but just fine. The 2010 Lightning Thief has aged like milk—not spoiled exactly, but definitely not fresh. The CGI looks clunky, the pacing drags, and if your kid has read the books, they'll spend the runtime listing everything the movie got wrong (and they won't be wrong).
That said, if your 9-year-old hasn't discovered Percy Jackson yet and you need a family movie night option, it'll do the job. The mythology is fun, the adventure structure works, and it might actually inspire them to pick up the books—which is where the real magic is anyway.
The bigger issue? The 2023 Disney+ series exists now and is significantly better—more faithful to the books, better cast, and actually feels like it was made this decade. So unless you're specifically doing a 'bad adaptation vs good adaptation' comparison project, or you're nostalgic for this version, just... skip to the show. Your kids will thank you, and so will Rick Riordan.
