Look, this movie exists. That's about the nicest thing we can say about it.
With an 18% critic score and a 2.8/5 on Letterboxd, Parental Guidance is the definition of forgettable family-comedy filler. The premise—old-school grandparents clash with modern helicopter-parenting methods—had potential in 2012, but the execution is lazy, the jokes are tired, and the 'insights' about parenting are about as deep as a kiddie pool.
Billy Crystal and Bette Midler try their best, but even talented performers can't save a script that relies on 'kids these days!' humor and predictable pratfalls. The 59% audience score suggests some families found it pleasant enough, but 'pleasant enough' isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.
If you need something safe and inoffensive for a family movie night and you've literally exhausted every other option, fine. But there are dozens of better family comedies that are actually funny, actually insightful, and actually worth your 104 minutes. This one's a pass unless you're specifically researching the depths of mediocre 2012 cinema.
