This is a perfectly serviceable kindergarten transition book that does exactly what it promises: makes the first day less scary through gentle humor and rhyme. It won't win any awards for originality (the 'anxious kid overpacks' trope is well-worn), but it works.
The real question is whether you need it. If your kid is genuinely nervous about kindergarten, this is a solid tool in your August arsenal. If they're already excited and confident, you can skip it. Either way, don't expect to revisit it after September—this is functional literature, not a forever favorite.
The WISE score reflects that it's well-executed for its narrow purpose but lacks the depth, humor, or rereadability of truly great picture books. It's the equivalent of training wheels: helpful for the moment, quickly outgrown, and nobody's getting nostalgic about them later.
