Octopath Traveler II is that rare modern game that respects both your kid's intelligence and your bank account. It's a meaty, story-rich JRPG that demands patience, reading stamina, and strategic thinking—which means it's absolutely not for every kid.
The good news: zero microtransactions, no toxic online features, and eight genuinely interesting character arcs exploring themes that'll give you actual conversation fodder at dinner. The HD-2D art is legitimately beautiful, and the turn-based combat rewards planning over button-mashing reflexes.
The reality check: this is a 60+ hour commitment with JRPG pacing that can feel glacial to kids raised on Fortnite. There's a LOT of reading—like, visual novel amounts—and some character stories deal with heavy themes (revenge, loss, betrayal) that, while not graphic, aren't exactly Bluey either.
If your kid actually finishes books, enjoys strategic games like Pokémon or Fire Emblem, and has the attention span for slow burns, this is a genuinely enriching choice. If they need constant stimulation, this will gather digital dust after two hours.
