Marvel's Runaways had a cool premise—diverse teens discover their parents run an evil organization and have to become heroes to stop them. It's got representation, moral complexity, and that delicious 'questioning authority' energy that teens love.
But here's the thing: critics liked it (84%) while actual viewers were pretty meh (63% audience score, 6.8 IMDb). It's slow-burn serialized drama that prioritizes teen angst and relationship dynamics over superhero action. Some families will love the character depth; others will find it boring compared to the MCU movies.
It's also definitely on the mature end for Marvel—this is Hulu, not Disney+. Expect content that earns that 14+ rating. The 'parents are villains' setup creates some genuinely heavy emotional territory about trust and identity.
If you've got a high schooler who likes character-driven drama with superpowers as garnish rather than the main course, this could work. But if they want Marvel action and humor, stick with the movies.
