Look, this is a perfectly serviceable made-for-TV biopic that does what it sets out to do: show J.K. Rowling's journey from struggling single mom to literary phenomenon. The problem is it does it in the most Lifetime-movie way possible—earnest, a bit melodramatic, and ultimately forgettable.
The 33% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes tells you what you need to know: it's not terrible, but it's not particularly good either. It's the kind of movie that feels like homework disguised as entertainment. If your kid is a massive Harry Potter fan and wants to know more about where the books came from, sure, it's informative. But it's not going to blow anyone away.
The bigger elephant in the room is that J.K. Rowling has become a controversial figure in recent years due to her public statements about transgender people. Depending on your family's values, that might make watching a hagiographic portrayal of her feel uncomfortable or outdated.
Bottom line: this is optional viewing at best. There are better biopics out there, and if your kid wants to learn about perseverance and creativity, there are more engaging ways to do it than sitting through 90 minutes of TV-movie melodrama from 2011.
