Here's the thing: this is a companion novella for a series that's running out of steam. The first Powerless book was a massive hit, but by the time we get to book 3.5, even fans are saying 'meh' and 'disappointed.'
Common Sense Media doesn't pull punches—they literally title their review 'has bad characters,' which is not what you want to see. The concept of Death as a character observing a doomed king has potential, but the execution seems to miss the mark. With a 3.8 Amazon rating and fans admitting they're only reading it for completion, this feels like homework for the devoted rather than a genuinely worthwhile read.
The themes are heavy—death, mortality, revenge, doomed love—without the character development or enrichment to justify the emotional weight. If your teen loved the early Powerless books, they'll probably read this anyway. But if they're on the fence about the series or haven't started yet, this novella isn't going to change anyone's mind. Skip it unless you're a completist who needs every scrap of the Powerless universe.
