This is a genuinely lovely film that got buried in the streaming avalanche of 2021. It's Czech, it's got 100% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and it tackles death and friendship with real heart and beautiful animation.
The catch: both main characters die in the first act. It's not graphic or traumatic—they wake up in animal heaven and go on an adventure—but it's also not Paddington. If your kid is ready to talk about death (or already asking questions), this is actually a fantastic entry point. If they're still firmly in the 'everyone lives forever' camp, maybe wait a year.
The friendship-transcending-enmity theme is genuinely enriching, and the animation has that European artistry that feels refreshing after the tenth Illumination movie. It's not a cultural juggernaut, so your kid won't be quoting it at school, but it's a solid, thoughtful watch for the right age and temperament.
