Demon Copperhead is a gut-punch you’ll be glad you felt. It’s the definitive novel of the Appalachian opioid crisis, but told through a kid you actually want to root for.
It’s not 'light' reading, and it definitely isn't 'safe' for younger kids, but for mature teens and adults, it’s essential. Kingsolver manages to make a 500+ page book about poverty feel like a page-turner. If you're looking for something that builds actual empathy and doesn't pull its punches about how hard some kids have it, this is the one.
