Bloodmarked is the rare sequel that actually raises the stakes of the original. It’s smart, it’s fast, and it doesn't pander to its audience.

If your kid is into urban fantasy but is tired of the same old 'European castle' tropes, this is the gold standard. Just be aware that it’s definitely on the more 'adult' side of Young Adult—the language is salty and the magic has a literal cost in blood. It's a fantastic pick for a teen who wants a story that respects their intelligence and doesn't sugarcoat the world.

Best for 14 and up. Mature 13-year-olds who have already cut their teeth on 'The Hunger Games' or 'Six of Crows' will be fine, but the heavy language and complex social themes make it a solid high school read.
