Here's the deal: Asphalt (2004) is a relic. It was a DS launch title that showed off the system's 3D capabilities back when that was impressive. Today? It's a museum piece.
The good news: unlike its modern mobile descendants (Asphalt 8, 9, etc.), this original has zero predatory monetization. No ads, no loot boxes, no "buy more coins!" pop-ups. It's a physical cartridge that does what it says on the tin.
The bad news: it's boring. The IGDB rating of 45/100 tells the story—even in 2004 this was middle-of-the-pack. The graphics are chunky, the handling is stiff, and the track variety (9 tracks total) is thin. Kids raised on Mario Kart 8 or Forza Horizon will wonder why anyone would play this.
If your kid is 10+ and genuinely into retro gaming or happens to have a DS lying around, fine. But as a 2025 recommendation? There are dozens of better racing games that are both more engaging AND safer. This one's only worth it for nostalgia or curiosity, not actual entertainment.
