This is a perfectly pleasant middle-grade novel that does what it sets out to do: take a fun magical premise and use it to explore honesty, self-reliance, and family complexity. It's not going to blow anyone's mind, but it's a solid choice for kids who like realistic fiction with a dash of magic.
The pencil hook is clever enough to get reluctant readers interested, and the emotional payoff is genuine without being heavy-handed. Messner knows her audience—the pacing is brisk, the friendship feels real, and the family revelations are handled with appropriate sensitivity.
That said, it's a 2016 middle-grade novel that feels like... a 2016 middle-grade novel. It's not dated in a bad way, but it's not particularly fresh or memorable either. Your kid will probably enjoy it, finish it, and move on to the next book without looking back. Which is fine! Not every book needs to be a life-changing masterpiece. This is a good library checkout or rainy-day read.
