Here's the thing: if your teen is already deep into Sword Art Online, they'll probably enjoy this. The 92% audience score tells you everything—fans got what they wanted. But that 42% critic score? That's the rest of us going 'this is fine, I guess?'
Progressive is genuinely better than the original SAO series in terms of respecting its female lead, but it's still anime with all the baggage that entails: fan-service moments, overwrought dialogue, and a premise that's inherently dark (people are dying for real in this game). The animation is pretty, the action is competent, but there's not much here for anyone who isn't already bought into the franchise.
Bottom line: This is for established anime fans 13+, not a family movie night pick, and definitely not a gateway anime for kids new to the genre. If your teen is begging to watch it and you're okay with PG-13 anime content, sure. But don't expect to be impressed yourself.
