Here's the deal: Wings of Fire is wildly popular with middle schoolers for good reason—it's imaginative, fast-paced, and has the kind of friendship-and-destiny story that hooks young readers. The world-building is legitimately impressive.
But parents keep getting blindsided by the violence. This isn't 'dragons have a battle and someone gets a scratch.' It's graphic death scenes, war brutality, and dark themes that multiple parents describe as 'taken aback' or 'more violent than expected.' One Christian parent review said they were 'really bummed' because the story is great but the violence made it a no-go for their family.
If your 10-12 year old has read Percy Jackson, Harry Potter (later books), and can handle intense fantasy violence, they'll probably love this. If you're considering it for a 7-8 year old because they like dragons? Preview it yourself first. The cute cover is doing a lot of heavy lifting to hide what's actually inside.
