Look, this is a competently-made 1980s horror remake that delivers exactly what it promises: a gelatinous space monster that melts people in graphic detail. The practical effects are legitimately impressive and hold up better than you'd expect.
But let's be clear—this is not remotely appropriate for kids or teens. The violence is visceral, a child dies horribly, and the body horror is designed to make you squirm. Even for the 17+ crowd, it's only worthwhile if you're specifically into retro horror.
The bigger issue? It's dated. The pacing drags, the acting is very 1980s-TV-movie, and while horror nerds appreciate it as a cult classic, most modern viewers will find it either boring or gratuitously gross without enough payoff. The 59% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes tells the real story—critics respect the craft, but regular people find it just okay.
If you've got a high schooler who's deep into horror and has already worked through modern stuff, fine. But there are better entry points to the genre, and this definitely isn't making anyone's must-watch list in 2025.
