The Bad Guys is the literary equivalent of Sour Patch Kids—kids devour it, parents tolerate it because at least they're reading.
The series absolutely nails its mission: getting reluctant readers (especially boys) to pick up a book. The graphic-novel format, fast pacing, and over-the-top humor work. The redemption premise is solid—villains trying to be heroes is a decent moral backbone.
But let's be real: this is maximum potty humor with minimal substance. Parent reviews consistently flag the crude jokes, dark themes, and lack of educational value. It's not harmful, but it's not exactly enriching either. If your kid is already a reader, they might find better options. If your kid thinks books are torture, this might be the gateway drug.
Think of it as the book version of Captain Underpants—effective, entertaining, occasionally annoying, and probably fine in moderation.
