Shanghai Knights is perfectly fine—and that's kind of the problem. It's a competent sequel that delivers exactly what you'd expect: Jackie Chan doing impressive stunts, Owen Wilson doing his Owen Wilson thing, and a plot that gets them from point A to point B without much depth.
The action is fun, the buddy dynamic works, and there's nothing overtly problematic beyond typical early-2000s comedy sensibilities. But here's the thing: it came out in 2003, and it shows. The humor feels dated, the cultural jokes don't quite land anymore, and the audience score of 54% tells you what you need to know—even when it was fresh, people were lukewarm.
For families with tweens/teens who love martial arts movies or are working through Jackie Chan's filmography, this is a decent rainy afternoon watch. But it's not enriching, it's not particularly memorable, and there are better action-comedies out there. It won't hurt anyone, but it probably won't wow anyone either.
