Look, if your kid is deep in a Pokémon phase, this will do the job. It's got the requisite legendary Pokémon, the friendship speeches, the cartoonish villain, and Ash being Ash. The mother-child storyline is genuinely sweet.
But let's be real: this is a 2010 mid-tier Pokémon movie with a 6.1 IMDb rating. It's not Detective Pikachu. It's not even the better theatrical Pokémon films. It's fine background entertainment for a rainy afternoon, but nobody's walking away transformed by the experience.
The illusion gimmick is cool for about 15 minutes, then it's just another Pokémon movie where the good guys win and everyone learns about friendship. If your kid demands it, it won't hurt them. But if they're not already invested in the franchise, there are way better animated films to spend 90 minutes on.
