Look, if your 17-year-old is a Metallica fan, they've probably already seen this and loved it. The concert footage is legitimately impressive—world-class musicians at the top of their game, shot beautifully in IMAX. The surreal apocalyptic storyline woven through it is... well, it's there. Some people love the ambition, others find it pretentious.
The real question is whether your teen is the target audience. If they're not already into heavy metal, this will be 93 minutes of "why are we watching this?" The violence and dark imagery in the narrative sequences are genuinely intense—not gratuitous, but definitely not mild.
Bottom line: This is a well-made film for a very specific audience. If your older teen loves Metallica or is seriously into music/concert production, it's worth watching. For everyone else? Skip it. There's no shame in admitting that heavy metal concert films aren't for your family.
