Look, Khumba has its heart in the right place. The message about accepting differences and finding your place in the world is genuinely valuable for young kids. The problem? It's just not very good.
Every review aggregator tells the same story: mediocre execution, derivative plot, forgettable characters. That 2.6 Letterboxd rating is brutal. This is the kind of movie that plays in the background at a dentist's office while kids wait for their appointment.
That said, if you've got a 5-7 year old who's into animal stories and hasn't yet developed discriminating taste, they might enjoy it just fine. It's safe, it's free on a dozen platforms, and it won't rot their brain. But let's be honest—there are dozens of better animated movies you could watch instead. This is a "sure, I guess" movie, not a "let's have a family movie night" movie.
The themes are worthwhile, the execution is meh, and your kids probably won't remember it a week later. Which, honestly, might be the kindest thing you can say about it.
