Horizon is Kevin Costner’s massive gamble on the Western genre, and while the cinematography is stunning, it’s a lot of movie to digest. It’s less a punchy action flick and more a sprawling historical novel brought to life. If your family is into Yellowstone, this is the cinematic ancestor they’ve been waiting for, but it’s not for the casual viewer.
The violence is heavy and the themes are mature. Because it’s only the first part of a planned four-part saga, it spends a lot of time moving chess pieces into place without necessarily winning the game yet. It’s a commitment, but for fans of the genre, it’s a rare piece of big-budget, earnest filmmaking.
