This is one of those shows that deserved better. Perfect critic scores, solid audience ratings, genuine cultural representation, and body-positive messaging wrapped in a warm family sitcom — then HBO Max (now just Max, but it was on HBO Max) cancelled it after one season.
The good news: what exists is genuinely solid. It's heartfelt without being saccharine, tackles real immigrant experiences without being a Very Special Episode, and the 'gordita' framing is actually refreshing in how matter-of-fact it is about body diversity.
The bad news: one season means you're getting attached to characters who won't get full arcs, and the 1980s period setting, while charming for parents, may feel like ancient history to kids (which, fair, it kind of is now).
If you've got a kid who needs to see themselves reflected — whether that's body type, immigrant experience, or just being the weird new kid — this is absolutely worth the short watch. Just manage expectations that it ends abruptly. Available on Hulu and Tubi, so at least it's accessible.
