Look, Fred Claus isn't going to traumatize anyone, but it's also not going to delight anyone either. With a 20% critic score and 45% audience score, this is a movie that exists purely to fill the 'holiday comedy' slot on streaming services.
The premise—Santa's resentful brother has to save Christmas—had potential, but the execution is flat. Vince Vaughn does his Vince Vaughn thing, but the script doesn't give him much to work with. The 'efficiency expert threatens to shut down Christmas' plot is as tired as it sounds.
Is it safe for kids? Absolutely. Is it wholesome? Sort of. Will your family actually enjoy watching it? Probably not. There are dozens of better holiday movies that won't feel like homework. If you're looking for something that combines family themes with actual entertainment value, try Elf, The Polar Express, or even Arthur Christmas instead.
This gets a 38 not because it's offensive or problematic, but because life is short and there are better ways to spend 116 minutes of your December.
