This is a legitimately excellent cooperative board game that happens to be based on a video game rather than a cynical IP cash-grab. The 8.1 BGG rating and medium-light complexity hit a sweet spot—engaging enough for serious gamers but accessible enough for families.
The cooperation is real and required. You can't lone-wolf this thing. Someone needs to scout ahead, someone needs to build platforms, someone needs to lay down covering fire. It creates natural teamwork moments and genuine tension when the bugs swarm.
The main barrier is time. 150 minutes is not an exaggeration. You need a dedicated game night, snacks, and players who won't check out after an hour. But if you can commit, you get a full narrative arc with memorable moments rather than forgettable filler.
For families with tweens and teens who enjoy strategy games, this is a strong addition to the shelf. It's also solo-able, which is rare and valuable for single-player households or when you can't wrangle a full group.
