This is the gold standard for what DC animated movies can be—smart, emotional, beautifully designed, and willing to treat Batman as more than just a guy who punches bad guys.
Mask of the Phantasm holds up shockingly well 30+ years later. The art deco Gotham is timeless, the voice acting is perfect (Kevin Conroy IS Batman), and the story manages to balance a compelling mystery with genuine romance and emotional stakes. Kids who are ready for Batman's world—meaning they can handle stylized violence, dark themes, and the Joker being genuinely menacing—will find a film that respects their intelligence.
It's not for younger kids who need lighter superhero fare, and the 9+ rating feels right. But for families with older elementary through high school kids (and parents who appreciate good storytelling), this remains essential viewing in the superhero canon.
