Battleship is the board game equivalent of plain toast—it's fine, it's safe, and you know exactly what you're getting, but nobody's getting excited about it.
The paper-and-pencil version has the advantage of being free and portable, which is nice. It teaches basic grid navigation and deductive reasoning, so there's some educational value for elementary-aged kids. The BGG rating of 4.7/10 tells you what you need to know: it's mediocre. Reviews consistently call it "a glorified guessing game," and they're not wrong.
The real issue is replay value. After a few rounds, kids figure out that success depends heavily on luck rather than skill, which can be frustrating. There are far better two-player strategy games out there if you want something with actual depth.
That said, if you're stuck somewhere with just paper and pencil, or if you want a quick nostalgia hit, Battleship does the job. Just don't expect anyone to beg for round seven.
