Look, Ballers is what it is: a breezy, occasionally fun HBO dramedy that lets you watch The Rock be charming while NFL players make terrible decisions in Miami. It's got decent ratings because it's competently made comfort food for sports fans who want something lighter than Hard Knocks but more grown-up than Friday Night Lights.
But let's be real - this is not family viewing. It's not even "mature teen" viewing unless you want to have a LOT of conversations about why cocaine at pool parties is actually a terrible idea. The show tries to sneak in some legitimate commentary about athlete exploitation, brain injuries, and financial literacy, but it's like hiding vegetables in a sundae made entirely of other sundaes.
For adults? It's fine. Entertaining enough. The Rock is always watchable. But for the Screenwise mission of finding great content for families? This ain't it. It's adult entertainment that belongs firmly in the "after the kids are asleep" category, and even then, you're not missing much if you skip it entirely.
