Almost Christmas is the kind of movie that sounds better on paper than it plays on screen. A talented cast (Danny Glover, Gabrielle Union, Kimberly Elise) tackles grief, family secrets, and reconciliation—all worthy themes—but the execution is uneven. The film can't decide if it wants to be a heartfelt drama or a raunchy comedy, so it splits the difference and ends up being neither particularly well.
The 49% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes tells the story: it's formulaic, predictable, and tonally inconsistent. The audience score is higher (64%), which suggests it has some crowd-pleasing moments, but this isn't a hidden gem. It's fine background viewing if your family is looking for representation in holiday films, but it's not going to become a new tradition.
For teens 13+ who can handle the language and adult themes, it's a decent conversation starter about grief and family dynamics. For everyone else, there are better holiday movies that don't undercut their emotional moments with crude jokes.
