Abyss is that rare board game that looks as good as it plays. The artwork alone makes it worth having on your shelf, but underneath the gorgeous sea creatures is a legitimately engaging strategy game.
It occupies a great middle ground: more interesting than gateway games like Ticket to Ride, but not so complex that you need to block out an entire evening and watch tutorial videos. The auction mechanics create genuine tension and teach real decision-making skills about resource allocation and timing.
The main caveat is that it's not really a family game unless your family has kids in middle school or high school. Younger kids will struggle with the strategic depth, even if they love the pretty pictures. But for families with tweens and teens who are ready to graduate beyond Catan? This is an excellent choice that won't feel like you're playing a "kids' game."
